For UW Students and K12 Teachers
The Biology
Program offers several courses for UW students interested in teaching biology.
In-service teachers are welcome on a space available basis (contact UW EXT extinfo@u.washington.edu). These include:
Biology 104: Biology for Elementary Teachers
Biology 491: Special Topics in Biological Science for Teachers
Biology 492: The Teaching of Biology for Secondary Teachers
- Biology 104: Biology for Elementary Teachers (5-credits)
Basic concepts of biology, with emphasis on background needed for confident use of the new science curriculum materials in the elementary school. Offered: AW. Instructor Helen Buttemer helenb@u.washington.edu.
- Biology 491: Special Topics in Biological Science for Teachers (3-9 credits)
Study of selected areas of biology. Designed to enhance the skills and background of K-12 teachers. Credit/no credit only. Recommended: teaching experience.
Summer Institute in Life Science for Middle School Teachers
Quarter Institute in Life Science for Middle School Teachers
- Biology 492: The Teaching of Biology (2 credits)
Basic course in the teaching of biology in the secondary school. Designed to help preservice teachers identify useful laboratory techniques, materials, and content for the teaching of pre-college biology. Special attention to current issues in biology education.
