Our first FIRST II Workshop

October 11-13, 2002

Pack Experimental Forest
and Conference Center

Friday Evening at Pack Hall

Teams are meeting each other and getting ready to do a "carousel" activity on Active Learning

Saturday morning-- with the frost still heavy on ground we begin our first Inquiry exercise. Determine how biodiversity changes with age of the forest.

We are wearing those most flattering orange vests because this happens to be the START of HUNTING season! Not to worry all returned safely from this exercise.

Sampling in action

sampling in the 0 age stand--smart because this is where the sun is!

things got a little thick in the 20 year stand!

time to report out on your sampling methods and prelimary results

What are the teachers talking about?

Now it is time to come up with your own question about these four different stands of trees (0. 10. 20, 70 year old plots)

Back to Pack Forest and McBride Hall

-------------- Now it is time to graph our findings

As usual, faculty are creative and expansive in finding space to work.

From the floor to the board--Presenting their finding to the class

Time for Lunch

With stomachs full we tackle our next task-- How to implement inquiry based exercises into anatomy & physiology,

ecology and evolution

and cell and molecular biology classes.

All work and no play makes us very grumpy so we used the afternoon to burn a few calories.

That's Christine going in for that lay-up.

Some outstanding scientists in a field.

more scientists out standing in a field!

Scott leading us in a discussion about Mazur's think-pair-share activity.

After a full days work its time to relax and talk about what we will do when we return to our campuses.
