Diverse pigment patterns of species closely related to zebrafish

Danios comprise at least 35–50 species and are native to India, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and elsewhere in east Asia. The traditional grouping "danio" has been split into different genera, Danio and Devario. Shown is our phylogeny for some of these species, derived from maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of 12S and 16S rDNA sequences (Quigley et al. 2004, Quigley et al. 2005). Both Danio and Devario include species with horizontal stripes, vertical bars, and uniform patterns, offering an outstanding opportunity to examine rapid and repeated evolutionary changes in pigment pattern. Below we provide examples of some of these species. Since some species go by several sometimes conflicting common and scientific names, we also provide links to 12S and 16S rDNA sequences that we have deposited in Genbank from the species shown in the accompanying images. If using these sequences in phylogeny reconstruction, please cite support from NSF IOB-0444517 to D. Parichy. Thanks!
