After several years of discussion and planning on the part of the Community College and University of Washington faculty, the first CC/UW Partnership Program in Biological Sciences was held in the summer of 1998. This pilot program was designed to foster closer working relationships between the Community Colleges and the University of Washington faculty, as well as hands-on laboratory experiences applicable to community college teaching. The pilot program in 1998 was funded by the UW. Beginning summer 1999, a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute will provide funding for the next four years.
Because one of the primary goals of the program is to establish a means of sharing teaching experience, all participants will receive a list of individuals in the academic and professional area who are willing to form mentor partnerships.
Schedule
Morning sessions (9:00 - 11:30) will consist of research lectures/discussions led by UW faculty doing research in the area of immunology, neurobiology, endocrinology, cardiorespiratory physiology and anatomy.
Afternoon session (1:00- 5:30 pm) will feature laboratory presentations in anatomy and physiology and suggestions on how to integrate these protocols into the community college biology curriculum.
The lab session is ONLY open to the selected participants but the speaker sessions are open to the public.
