Project: This project consisted of work focused on plant, mammal, fish and bird life. Construct, modify, and maintain irrigation systems to supplement experimental willow tree plots within the major blast zone. Willow demography and studies of abundance and damage from an invasive weevil, Cryptorhynchus lapathi, within the blast zone. Other duties included: assisting with small mammal trapping, measuring, sexing and tagging in riparian and upland sites throughout the monument; assisting with fish sampling, measuring and tagging in Spi it Lake; and conducting daily avian observations and surveys.

Project: Researching internship programs at zoos and aquariums nationally in order to help develop a formal internship program at the Seattle Aquarium. Other activities: caring for mammals and Puget sound fish by cleaning tanks/exhibits, preparing food and enriching and feeding the animals, and educating the public about the different animals at the aquarium.

Project: The goal of this project was to examine genes that are missing from current gene annotations of Plasmodium yoelli. This was accomplished by comparison of orthologs from other Plasmodium species through database searches.

Project: Genotyping mutant zebrafish knockouts to identify homozygous and heterozygous individuals lacking a functional key protein necessary for the proper development of the adaptive immune response. Techniques learned included PCR, gel electrophoresis, recombinant DNA cloning, dissection and preparation of tissue samples for histology. Additional duties included care and feeding of Zebrafish, water quality testing, and maintenance of rotifer cultures.
