What is an Internship?
An internship is a structured agreement between a student, the internship coordinator and/or faculty sponsor, and an internship site supervisor that is designed to give the student a significant research experience in a work setting.

What types of internships do Biolgy majors do? There are a variety of opportunities in biology-related areas including:

  • Private Sector (e.g. Biotechnology)
  • Research Institute (e.g., Allen Institute for Brain Science, Institute for Systems Biology)
  • Nonprofit Organizations (e.g., Seattle Aquarium, Woodland Park Zoo)
  • Government Agencies (e.g., Northwest Fisheries Science Center, Department of Fish and Wildlife)

Can I receive credit for an Internship?
Biology majors can earn credit for an internship by enrolling in Biol 399. Biol 399 is a new course that is now offered every quarter.

Pre-requisites for Biol 399: Biol 220 AND Biol 390 (or by application)

Internships that contain a research component and will be performed at an off-campus biology-related organization will be considered for academic credit eligibility. If you have identified an internship opportunity but have NOT taken Biol 390, please fill out an Internship Application Form (use link provided on left-hand panel of this page). You will be notified if you are eligible to enroll in Biol 399 for academic credit.

Students will be able to apply up to 10 credits combined of Biol 399 and Biol 499 to the biology major as upper division electives.

Credit will be based on internship hours worked (@ credit = 3-4 hours/week) with a minimum of 3 credits required.

Biol 399 students will also attend monthly discussions with other interns and complete a research paper on a related topic.
